Here
are what you might call production notes. Just a little
background on what we are up to, how the site works and
so forth.
How
to Submit your Stories and Pictures
March
16, 2000
On
the March news page (and below left) we have taken advantage
of some free Celtic graphics from this interesting website:
Sandis
Celtic Graphics. We expect to use this resource again.
Making
submissions to the website
To
put something on the website (text or pictures) send it attached
to email to richard@whitesite.com
There is no dynamic (instant) way to place your info on the
website. It is just not that sophisticated. Submissions can
be sent via email (or snail mail on disk) to me.
Feel
free to submit any time. We will post the updates as they
arrive. Below is a reprise of the format information we sent
out a while back. Please don't hesitate to ask questions if
any of this is unclear.
The
website is organized much like the family directory (White
Book), with a sub-page set up for each of the eight (Aunts
and Uncles) families. Each family may submit whatever images
and text (electronic files preferred) that they wish. You
might want to designate an editor or on the other hand prefer
to send things individually. It makes no difference.
Pictures:
Many local photo services are offering electronic images along
with regular photo processing at prices that are getting more
and more competitive. The preferred image file formats
are gif or jpg. If necessary I can convert most other
image file formats. If you need help or advice about getting
images to electronic files ask your photo dealer about the
most economical way to go about it. If you are still stuck
I can certainly scan a few images to get things started. I
can process prints or slides and see to it that the originals
are returned. It is also a good idea to date your pictures
and compose a brief caption to identify the faces. (I am sure
those of you who haven't seen me in 20 years would need a
little prompting to pick me out of a crowd).
Text:
Write whatever you want (whatever you dare!). Holiday letters
have been mentioned and would make a perfect place to start.
But also this would be a wonderful place for remembrances
and anecdotes. Old photos too might get you thinking and be
the inspiration for an extended caption. I can see a whole
collection on the family home on Elliott Road in Great Neck.
On the subject of electronic form, useful text file
formats are: MS Word (.doc), plain/ASCII text (.txt), Lotus
Word Pro (.lwp) Rich Text (.rtf) Windows Write (.wri)
attached to email or, if not too lengthy, right in the body
of email.
We
will compose on the web page and put the latest submissions
at the top of each page and also keep a running reference
log of when the site is updated. So take the opportunity over
the coming holidays to chat this idea up among your cousins
and aunts and uncles. I would love to have a couple of collaborators
to help organize the material (I am, of course, expecting
volumes) and would welcome your participation at whatever
level works for you. Collect some pictures and stories and
send them along.
As
cousin Doreen says, "What a neat way to keep connected."
