Mom's Memoirs

As we predicted, web traffic has been light with the coming of the good weather. We do have a few email items for you that have come in over the last week or so including a contemporary photo of the Elliott Road House and musical reminiscence of Pop prompted by Aunt Mary Clare coming across an old tune on CD.

Subject: Update

I had never read or heard Grandma's stories and had a good time learning about her early years. I loved Aunt Mary Clare's memories of car rides with Grandpa and encourage all the other Aunts and Uncles to tell tales. Alot of us were too little to sit around the table and hear all the stories about when the eight of them were children. I'd really enjoy hearing about my dad.

Here's some updates from our branch of the tree.

Mom's done well with her surgery and is able to get around without a cane now so thanks to all for your thought and prayers. We'll be celebrating her 70th b'day at my house in Green Pond 7/1/00 and if any one is in the area please call for directions, we'd love to see you. I hope to get some pictures to send in. (The Christmas pictures were taken with a flash and the group is so large we needed a wide angle lens - not the best definition for a transfer to digital )

Wendy's son Bill Jr. graduated from the Navy basic training program this May. Wendy and Craig, Katie, Derik and Bill Sr. all flew out to see the ceremony (and feed him fast food and candy ) before he was shipped out for more training. When he gets assigned to a ship or base he'll get an email address and would love to be linked up and hear all the news from home. Katie graduated from SCC and is continuing at St. Josephs to get her BA in education. She's planning on elementary education.

Susan's husband Rob was sworn in as a NYPD officer and has been maintaining a 90 + average in the academy. He's very busy with all the commuting, homework and tests but is enjoying his new role and we're very proud of him. We had a beautiful Easter at Ted and Carolyn's house and look forward to swimming in their new built-in pool this summer. Erik, Stefanie and Rebecca are putting an addition on their house and are planning to spend some of the demolition/construction time with Stefanie's Mom in Greece.

We've been busy and blessed and hope that everyone else has been as fortunate. Keep the news coming it's what keeps us connected.

love, Doreen.

Hi
One of my favorite songs, that my brother Bobby use to play and sing with his Bluegrass Band, was "Two Little Boys". That is amazing that Grandpa White used to sing it to his kids when they were small.

Thanks Aunt Mary Clare for remembering that!!!

Mary Ann (Keleher) is online now too. maryannkelleher@hotmail.com

Hello there.
It's Brian White, youngest son of the late Ed White. Wanted to connect and let you know I'm online. If you could spread the word, that would be fantastic. Crazy thing, I've been sending my friends links to the pictures of grandpa white. Cousin Elizabeth Chayer told me that I look an aweful lot like him, and my friends and I all agree. I do very much look like him. I'll have to get a picture of me sent in. Take care, talk to you soon.

Hi
When I was growing up, Pop (my father, your grandfather) used to sing songs to us younger children when we were riding in the car. Ed, Fran, George and I were often called "the four babies." (I don't know if he ever sang to the older children - he could be very stern - but he had mellowed by the time we younger ones were growing up.)

One of his "ditties" went: "There's a lady by the river with a sliver in her liver. Did she shiver? Well, I say she did!"

One song was called "Two Little Boys." I had not heard it for years when back in the 60's I bought a recording of it on a 45 record. The song was sung by Noel Harrison, son of Rex Harrison. (I've never heard any thing more of Noel Harrison, before or since that record.) I still have that 45 record, but don't have anything to play it on now! However, recently, I came across "Two Little Boys" on a CD collection of songs from the Civil War. It always reminds me of Pop.

Here it is.
Love, Mary Clare

Two Little Boys

Two little boys had two little toys
Each had a wooden horse
Gayly they played each summer day
Warriors both of course.

One little chap, he had a mishap
and broke off his horse's head
He wept for his toy, then cried with joy
When he heard his brother say
"Do you think I could leave you crying
When there's room on my horse for you
Climb up here, Joe, and stop your crying
We'll mend up your horse with glue.

"When we grow up, we'll both be soldiers
And our horses will not be toys
And maybe you will remember when we were two little boys."

Long years had passed and war came at last
And bravely they marched away
Cannons roared loud amid the wild crowd
Where wounded and dying Jack lay
Then came a cry, a rider dashed by out from the ranks of Blue
He galloped away to where Jack lay.
Then he heard his brother say
"Did you think I could leave you dying
When there's room on my horse for two
Climb up here, Jack,
We'll soon be flying to the ranks of the boys in Blue."

"Can't you see, Joe,
I'm all atremble It may be the flash and the noise, Or it may be because I remember
When we were two little boys."
